The American Bar Foundation (ABF) is offering Doctoral/Postdoctoral Fellowships to encourage original and significant empirical and interdisciplinary research in the field of law and inequality.

Eligibility for American Bar Foundation(ABF) Doctoral Fellowships Program, 2019-20:

  • Students who are candidates for Ph.D. degrees and also have finished all the doctoral requirements except the dissertation by September 1, 2019, are eligible to apply for American Bar Foundation(ABF) Doctoral Fellowships Program, 2019-20.
  • Proposed or Doctoral research must belong to the general area of sociolegal studies or include social scientific approaches to the legal processes, legal institutions, or law. 
  • Significant issues in the field of Law & Inequality must be addressed in the research by the applicant.
  • Doctoral or proposed research for American Bar Foundation(ABF) Doctoral Fellowships Program, 2019-20 must show promise of a major contribution to a social scientific understanding of law and inequality. 
  • Candidates from underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to apply. 

Application procedure:

  • Candidates applying for American Bar Foundation(ABF) Doctoral Fellowships Program, 2019-20 must include a writing sample or a dissertation proposal that briefly describes substance and methods of the research.
  • A curriculum vitae of the applicant.
  • Applicants must include two letters of reference of which one must be from a supervisor of the dissertation.
  • In addition, students may submit a short sample of written work.

Value of the American Bar Foundation(ABF) Doctoral Fellowships Program, 2019-20:

  • Stipend of $35,000 per year and can continue for up to two academic years.
